Electronics Engineering

Bespoke electronics for mission critical applications

Electronics Engineering at IntelliDesign

We design bespoke electronics, ranging from embedded microprocessor systems to power supplies, from wireless RF devices to custom electro-optic sensors. Our circuits are engineered to mitigate component availability challenges and meet the environmental demands in which the device operates.

Our systems engineering processes have been refined and tuned to the stringent AS9100D Aerospace standard. We offer specification development, requirements management, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and reliability studies for MTBF. We close the loop on verification and validation as part of our design process.

Specialisation

IntelliDesign have customers in medical, mining, industrial, defence and aerospace industries, so the team has developed specialist skills and knowledge in the design of highly regulated products that operate for extended periods in harsh environments. This includes environmental sensor conditioning, high speed digital systems and miniaturised, battery-operated, low power, IoT devices. We also design rugged automotive computers and display products suitable for mining and military applications, and industrial Remote Terminal Units (RTU’s) for power and water utilities.

Embedded Development

Our hardware engineers work closely with our embedded firmware specialists in our software team, designing hardware with software needs in mind. They make hardware selections to complement software development where possible – understanding low-level Linux and Zephyr RTOS driver architecture and board-support (BSP) – resulting in a more efficient overall development cycle.

Component Challenges

We design our circuits to mitigate component availability issues and have long term relationships with component suppliers for advance warning of end-of-life challenges. We have robust processes for obsolescence management, working closely with our clients to secure continuation of supply to maintain the quality of the manufactured product.

Microcontroller Choices

We have a somewhat agnostic approach to microcontroller choices and architectures to ensure that the best platform is used appropriately for the product purpose, considering the size constraints, power usage, the environment, the cost, the component availability and the scale of manufacture. We have experience with RISC-V, ARM, PowerPC and X86 architectures using STM32, ESP32, NVIDIA Jetson, Nordic NRF91, NXP i.MX and PowerQuicc, Arduino and Raspberry Pi components as some examples. We match these processors with your choice of peripherals such as high-speed DDR RAM, eMMC, PCIE, SATA, USB, I2C, SPI and a host of other local interconnects.

Prototyping

Prototyping is a vital part of any design process providing validation of ideas and physical proof of concept models. We have a dedicated production line for prototyping printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA) and a prototype test lab for verification of these prototypes.

Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA)

IntelliDesign has been manufacturing finished electronic products for decades and the design outputs from the team naturally need to consider manufacturing and efficient product assembly as part of the process. Our manufacturing facility is a short walk from our design and engineering office, so designing products that are suitable for efficient and economical manufacturing at scale, is one of our competitive advantages at IntelliDesign. We design our circuit boards to IPC standards and consider assembly standards such as J-STD-001 when thinking about the overall board manufacture.

Compliance

We have extensive experience achieving global compliance to CE, ACMA-RCM, FCC, UL standards for both EMC and safety testing. We have engineers trained in the design and production of Intrinsically Safe (IS) devices to the IECEx standards for explosive atmospheres, and meeting standards for Medical ISO 13485 and Aerospace AS9100D.

We also consider Electrical Safety in overall product design, with an understanding of EN61010-1, IEC62368-1 and EN60601-11, amongst others.

EMC / RF Design

Our decades of experience designing products to meet stringent electromagnetic compatibility standards, together with in-house testing procedures provides pre-compliance confidence before we engage an independent test lab. We have a range of equipment to do pre-compliance immunity testing for IEC61000-4 EFT, ESD and Surge. We also have a capability of performing conducted emissions and basic radiated debugging.

Although RF is a specialised field, IntelliDesign has some experience in design, more specifically around ISM band, 2.4GHz and RFID antenna tuning and matching.

FPGA Development

Many projects at the edge of signals processing require custom programmable logic. We’ve supported clients with FPGA development both in hardware and HDL, with experience in VHDL and Verilog code development, verification and debug. This experience has made use of both Intel (Altera) and Xilinx logic devices including hybrid Cyclone and Virtex processors.

Radios and Communication

Radios feature in many of the rugged automotive and IoT devices that we make. We have experience with a wide range of embedded radio technologies such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, Wi-Fi, HaLoW and LoRA, Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2X). We regularly design with a variety of cellular 4G/5G radios, both terrestrial and Satellite Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN).

We work with both low-cost standard and high performance, high precision GNSS (GPS/GLONASS/BeiDou), single and multi-frequency, single and dual antenna systems for positioning.

Our wired communications experience extends from USB 3.0 and 10/100/1G/10GBase-T through to RS232/485, CAN and automotive single-pair ethernet (SPE).
