Our Work

Industrial Design

Successful products are born from good design. Good design is founded upon understanding people, the operating context, and manufacturing realities. The industrial design team at IntelliDesign create aesthetically appealing products which are physically dependable, intuitive to use, and efficient to manufacture.

Beautiful, practical geometry

The industrial design team play a key role in bringing together the promise of what a product might be to physical fruition. Our industrial designers define the geometry, specify the physical form, and develop the user interface of the product. They listen to people and take a user centered approach to design, turning customer ideas into manufacturable commercially attractive products.

Our team has extensive experience in creating electronic products for medical, mining, industrial, defence and aerospace industries. From vehicle-based systems, to wearables, rack mount instrumentation to space modules.

Specialisation

IntelliDesign specialises in the design of highly regulated products that operate in harsh and challenging environments with long-term in-service reliability. Many of the products we create need to withstand the freezing cold, corrosive chemicals, high vibration, intense shock, lashing wind, rain, and unrelenting UV sunlight. Our in-house test lab of vibration tables and environmental chambers allows us to
freeze, soak, sauna, shake, physically and thermally shock the designs we create.

Having multiple design and engineering disciplines working side-by-side is very efficient for collaborative and rapid development. The diversity of skills brings cross pollination of ideas and cross-disciplinary empathy for design challenges. Our team excels at creating products where user touch points, mechanical components, electronic hardware, and digital interfaces come together in compact, ordered assemblies.

Materials and processes

Each manufacturing process, material and finish has its strengths and weakness. We assemble together thousands of parts every week utilising a multitude of production processes.

Each day, to list just a few, we design and assemble, plastic injection moulded enclosures, precision die-cast housings, CNC machined components, aluminium extrusions, and sheet metal fabrications. Elastomers, UV adhesives, die cut gaskets, and thermal interface materials, seal, cool and bond our products together. Expertise and experience with a wide variety of processes, materials andfinishes enables us to create cost effective dependable products for indoors and outdoors across land, sea and space.

Aesthetics & design language

Product reliability and dependability builds customer trust. Appealing and beautiful aesthetics trigger an emotional connection between user and product. Our designers create products with appealing cohesive aesthetics, that complement device functionality and enhance usability.

The most resilient aesthetics are seldom skin deep. The close collaboration between our industrial designers and hardware engineers enables finesse in the fine details where casing and hardware meet. Every new product is an opportunity to bolster a company brand. Through concept development sketching, photo-realistic rendering and physical model fabrication we collaborate with customers to develop product aesthetics and effective design languages. Prototyping

Learning is seldom more tangibly visible than when a prototype comes together. Prototypes are a powerful and vital part of any design process for driving learning and validating ideas. We prototype extensively and build hundreds of prototypes every year.

Prototypes are built with specific learning objective in mind. Rapid fail fast learning may be best served by quick cardboard mock-ups, or conversely a complex electromechanical interaction may demand a precision build. Quick 3D prints are excellent for ergonomic investigations, while high fidelity prototypes can offer the look, feel and function of a production article. Proof of concept devices may test selective function elements while a digital interface mockup may validate a user story.

IntelliDesign has extensive in-house prototyping facilities including multiple 3D printers and a well equipment manual workshop. We have a trusted network of specialist part fabricators which we combine with our own manufacturing
capabilities to deliver physical working prototypes.

Design for manufacture and assembly – DFMA

To effectively execute DFMA you need to understand manufacturing. Hands on experience is an excellent teacher. Our designers and engineers’ workstations are 20 paces from the production lines. Close proximity of enthusiastic designers and skilled production technicians breeds knowledge sharing and spawns innovative solutions for efficient and economical manufacturing at scale.

IntelliDesign has been manufacturing finished electronics products for decades. The deep production expertise within the organisation ensures that right from initial concepts, the team is looking for manufacturing and assembly efficiencies. The know-how born of having both manufacturing and design in-house has made
DFMA one of our strongest competitive advantages.

Sustainable design

IntelliDesign is certified to ISO14001 for Environmental Management. Our environmental policy encompasses all business activities, of which new product development is a key pillar.

Designers have an opportunity and responsibility to reduce the eco-cost of the products they design. Whether we are designing for reuse, repair or recycling, our designers consider the environmental aspects in tandem with broader project requirements. We take a critical approach to material selection and choice of production processes. Our end-to-end service offering gives us transparent control of our supply chain enabling accurate product lifecycle analyses from cradle to grave. To reduce the eco-cost of the products they design, our team aims to:

  • Create reliable products of longevity and serviceability,
  • Optimism device operating efficiency so products require less energy to operate,
  • Keep material content to a minimum and eliminate non-recyclable materials where possible.
  • Design for disassembly and the efficient separation products into their constituent elements.
